Heart valve rot, 7-hour surgery: Doctors call it a "miraculous event"

Heart valve rot, 7-hour surgery: Doctors call it a "miraculous event"

Aziz Karabörk, who presented to the Cardiology Department of Kahramanmaraş Sütçü İmam University Health Practice and Research Hospital complaining of shortness of breath, was examined by Associate Professor Dr. Mehmet Kirişci. The patient's examination and tests revealed a heart valve rot and a mass in his heart, both caused by a childhood febrile illness.

Karabörk was then taken into surgery. When his heart valve was opened, it was revealed that the mass inside Aziz Karabörk's heart was larger than anticipated. Surgery was surprising to Mehmet Kirişci and his team, and the removal of the mass and replacement of the heart valve took seven hours. At the end of the surgery, the 10-centimeter, 250-gram mass was removed from Karabörk's heart.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Kirişci stated that Aziz Karabörk's childhood febrile illness caused a heart rhythm disorder, which resulted in a clot forming within his heart. Kirişci noted that if left undetected in time, the clot can grow and form a mass, and continued:

In this patient, these clots that break off during this growth can cause serious problems, including death and stroke, by spreading to the brain or any other organ in the body. Now, this patient was not treated until the clot had grown to an advanced stage, reaching approximately 10 centimeters. During this progression, the clots could have broken off and caused paralysis or death, but they miraculously grew unnoticed until they reached approximately 10 centimeters. If these clots had broken off at this stage, death could have occurred. Therefore, we diagnosed this patient and took him to surgery. During the surgery, his rheumatic heart valve was calcified. We removed it, and when we opened it, the most important thing we saw was a clot that had completely filled the left side of the heart, forming in pieces, reaching 10 centimeters in size and weighing 250 grams in total. The fact that this patient had survived this far and reached this stage is a miraculous event for this patient. While removing the clots, we saw that the heart valve was completely filled with blood. We saw that a new membrane had formed inside. This is one of the indicators of how late the process is until the growth stage. We removed and cleaned both this clot membrane and all the clots completely."

"A MIRACULOUS EVENT"

Kirişci, who stated that they perform heart valve replacement and mass removal surgeries in a single operation, said, “Surgeries like heart valve replacements take 3-4 hours. Of course, when we took this patient into surgery, we knew there was a clot from some tests beforehand, but we were quite surprised to see such a large and organized clot during the surgery, and therefore, the surgery was much longer than we expected. We successfully completed the surgery after an average of 6-7 hours. We combined two major heart surgeries into one operation. Not only was the heart valve defect completely repaired, a new heart valve was installed, and the clots inside the heart were removed down to the smallest particle. Of course, we've performed similar surgeries before. We've performed surgeries involving a clot or a collapsed heart valve in our operations. However, the weight and size of the clot in this patient's heart are unprecedented. A heart mass this large is extremely rare. In other words, a clot measuring 10 centimeters or larger, and it had to be removed.” “It is a miraculous event,” he said.

'I FELT LIKE I WAS 20 YEARS YOUNGER'

Aziz Karabörk stated that he had recovered well following surgery. He noted that the size of the mass removed from his heart had surprised him. "I had no idea there was such a mass," he said. "I was very surprised when they showed it to me after I came out of anesthesia. I had no idea such a thing existed. May God bless our doctors. They brought me back to life. I couldn't walk; I was paralyzed after taking even two or three steps. But I'm fine now. Even though I just had surgery, I can still walk in elevators with my feet. Because my heart valve was replaced and the debris inside my heart was cleaned, I felt like I was 20 years younger."
